Completing the EzExpense Pro App

by Ethan Tesfai - Aug 20, 2026

As my co-op placement comes to an end, one of the biggest milestones was completing the EzExpense Pro app and its ERP integration. A major part of the final development was completing the Business Central integration, allowing external ERP systems to be connected directly to the application. This included finalizing the connection process, retrieving ERP companies and items, and ensuring expenses could properly interact with the connected ERP environment.

We also finalized the AI-powered receipt capture feature. The system can extract information such as the merchant, date, subtotal, tax, total, and expense category from uploaded receipts. During the final stages, I worked on fixing issues with the extracted data, improving category and subcategory mapping, and making sure the information was correctly processed and populated throughout the application.

The final stage of development focused on resolving remaining bugs, improving the user experience, and ensuring the different components of the application worked together reliably. This included testing the ERP connection process, expense submission, receipt processing, and other core functionality.

Since this is my final blog post, I also want to reflect on my overall experience during my co-op. I genuinely enjoyed my time working on EzExpense and learned a lot throughout the placement. I gained practical experience in full-stack application development, AI-powered automation, enterprise software, ERP system integration, data management, and building systems that connect multiple services together.

One of the biggest things I learned was that developing a complete enterprise application involves much more than getting individual features to work. A significant part of the process is troubleshooting, testing edge cases, integrating different systems, and making sure everything works reliably as one product. Being involved throughout that process gave me a much better understanding of how real-world software is developed and maintained.

Overall, I’m proud of what we were able to accomplish with the Pro app and grateful for the experience I gained throughout my co-op. It was a great opportunity to apply what I’ve learned in school to real-world engineering problems, work with technologies I had not previously used, and contribute to a product from development through to completion. This experience has given me a much stronger foundation going forward and a better understanding of the type of software engineering work I want to pursue.
